confused

Post a new topicby Danelia on Fri Jun 05, 2009 9:53 am

Hello, I have a concern and i just dont know what to do. About 5 or 6 days ago my husband and I moved to a new house. the day after our fisrt night i noticed my 9 month old american bull dog had what appeared to be 2 scratches on his forhead. It may even look like gashes. well i was putting antibiotic on it for like 1 or 2 days then i noticed he had a circular reddish mark on his shoulder. its round. about 2 days later another red circle appeared by his cheek. So last night i got home from work and his food was untouched, he was in a corner backed up, i would call him he would just look at me and you can tell he was struggling to walk my way. he is panting with his tongue out and he is slobbering. he hasnt been aggressive but im still concerned. hes also walking slowly and to me it seems like hes having trouble moving. He just looks sad not mean. He has NOT been vaccinated yet. I was actually getting around to doing that this weekend. Should I be concerned with rabies? Im in denial.

hi again

I am Daveyo

There is nothing to be confused about here because you mentioned the dog has not been vaccinated.

Whatever happened took place at your old residence. The dog had it for some time.

No matter what right now and it is late here, do not approach or go near that dog without a long pole and a tie to snap the mouth shut. You might be having a Rabies case on your hands.

no cure for rabies if the dog was not vaccinated.

It will need to be tested for Rabies and they can find out pretty fast. If no rabies, then it is something else such as Distemper. These are the only two most dangerous diseases now out.

Distemper there is a cure.

Rabies can be taken care of if the dog was previously vaccinated, but in your case, no rabies shot means if it has rabies it is fatal and put the dog down. It gets very dangerous and its very contagious.

Your description is indicative of RABIES.

Call the VET immediately and make sure you do not get cut or any scratch from the infected animal.

unfortunetly my dog died the day after i posted this blog. The vet ran test on him, he said it wasnt rabies, everyhting in the blood came out fine except his white blood cells were higher than they should have been. The vet said he had some kind of stomach thing. the dog was having loose bowels and throwing up...we really dont know what went wrong with my poor dog.

Hi

Well the indications you gave pointed towards possible Rabies as indicative but I myself had some doubts but never the less did not want to rule it out either.

I elected to tell you how to get the dog the safe way just in case.

If the VET tested and Rabies was negative, you should have had an autopsy done to find out exactly what killed that dog. I am very curious to know myself here. Suspecting this or that does not help on a verbal assumption. Actual autopsy will be concise.

It cannot be parvo that is for sure because Parvo dehydrates the animal very fast and the WBC would be very low. So that eliminates another disease here. You have two for sure not the causes.

Rabies, and Parvo.

Possibles - poisoning, or Distemper or toxoplasmosis ???? any others???? You should find out.

My condolences to you and your pet.

Good luck

Thank you I very much appreciate your concerns...before the dog died he was panting alot and his tongue was hanging out the side of his mouth. I was trying to give him gatorade like the vet had told me but he was so weak i had to give it to him with a dropper. But he still passed. Is it possible he ate a toad? everyone tells me that. It had been raining alot here in miami and there were toads around the yard. I think though that he dehydrated at the end.

don't know, but yes toads can kill dogs due to the poisons they have on the skin and body.
