Rabies

i came home from work today and noticed that my dog (ruger) is acting differently. This morning he was playing and jumping around, but this afternoon he was quiet and almost like he was depressed. He keeps going to his crate and laying down. Normally he would be in my lap. Also he growled at my son. Usually they play together but today he growled when my son went to pet him. His is acting apologetic. As though he is in trouble for something. I'm not sure what to make of this. He and my other dog (rosco) stay in a fenced in area in our back yard during the day. We do live in a very rural area and it is possible that an animal such as a raccoon could have gotten in. He is eating and drinking water though. I'm just not sure what is going on. If anyone has an idea could you let me know?
