My dog died

Post a new topicby anasazi on Wed Nov 28, 2007 7:16 pm

We just got a 6-month old puppy and had not yet taken her to the vet to be vaccinated. She was hit by a car last week, and Animal Control would not let us euthanize her until she had been quaratined for 10 days. They let us keep her quarantine at home. She died today, and there was a yellow fluid that appeared to be coming from her nose. Before her death, she showed no definite signs of rabies although some symptoms could be attributed to the injuries and the subsequent pain she suffered from being hit by the car - muscle tremors, depression, loss of apetite, some paralysis. Could the yellow fluid coming from her nose/mouth area indicate rabies? Animal Control picked her up and has sent her for rabies testing.

Wait for the test results. I doubt it being rabies.

Why you not vaccinate your dog??????

Your dog had serious internal injuries and could have been saved. I not understand the animal control motives. Rabies test can be answered in less than 24 hours.

Insane.

We adopted the dog from a private party. I had called the vet to schedule an appointment for her initial visit and vaccinations, but she was injured before the appointment occurred.

Our local animal control was probably just trying to save a few bucks. They probably didn't want to pay for rabies testing, so they wanted to wait for 10 days, then release my dog from quaratine. If I had put her down before that, they would have to pay for the testing. As it turned out, she died from her injuries before the quaratine was over, so they had to pay anyway. They were supposed to come out to check on her after on day 5, but never showed up. I had to call them on Day 8 to find out why they hadn't come. The let us quarantine her at home, which didn't make sense. If they really suspected rabies, it seems that they would want her away from people. Maybe they felt sorry for her because she was hurt.

Sorry to hear about what happened. Next time (God forbid) if it happens to you, and the dog is injured, take it straight to the VET. Let them handle the situation instead of the animal control.

I understand

That's normally what I would have done, but animal control was called by the person who hit her before I was even aware of the accident. The guy was just trying to do the right thing, I guess.
