Rabies

i was bit by a pitbull. the owner said she had been vaccinated, but the dog did not have tags. can a dog in the early stage of rabies infect a person or is it only in the acute stage when the dog is showing classic symptoms such as foaming at the mouth? since rabies is transmitted via dog's saliva and is not present in the saliva in the initial stage of infection, is it safe to assume that if the dog is not symptomatic it's saliva is probably still harmless?
