Hi

Just came across your post here out of the blue and just from reading your story you have no idea how lucky both of you are. Had it been a night while you were sleeping when that dog would have hit the phase of attacking, both of you would have had to undergo Rabies shots too.

rabies has to be from a contact via thru saliva or some means to transfer quickly since Rabies does not survive in the air for more than a few seconds. It is extremely very rare for a transmission of rabies from a scratch.

Obviously you missed the incident that affected your dog. So the dog contracted Rabies from its original source before you bought the dog. That is where it happened. Breeder or kennel.

Before any signs begin to show on the animal it takes almost 3 months. Yes that is a very long time but by the third month we are talking of only days from phase one to phase two and then the final phase of the disease. it is rapid the downturn.

If you get any dog less than 10 weeks old then the odds of it having rabies is greatly reduced, and at the same time do test that dog for any signs of Distemper especially. Distemper should be the first thing checked and to do that you need to do the bladder smear test procedure and you can get your answer in 30 minutes. If clean then vaccinate that dog right away. Don't give it a full shot, give only 1/2 shot as to not insult the immune system. The next half shot give 10 days later. A full vaccine dose is meant for a 60 pound dog or 27kg.

good luck
