Cat attackedMy 1 year old male, Merlin, was attacked on Monday or Tuesday (he was missing for those days) by a dog, fox, or coyote based on the size of the puncture. The wound is right by his left ear on top of his head and goes straight to the bone. It was incredibly infected (over 1/2 a cup approximately of pus when I drained the wound). He also lost a claw on his right front paw and another on his rear right paw, which is showing signs of infection. I have procured antibiotics and have been administering treatment since yesterday. I have also been giving 81mg aspirin for pain. He appears more alert and active, is eating again, and sleeping a great deal.
My problem is that he won't stop scrubbing the wound either with his paw or on the floor and I can't keep dirt out of it...any ideas on how to bandage or cover this? I've left it open to the air with a liberal coating of triple antibiotic plus ointment. Any suggestion appreciated greatly!!!!! Thanks
Re: Cat attackedGet a plastic round cover which is sold at the VET place. Secondly do not give it ASPRIN. Oh boy. treat the wound with antiseptic liquid solution and get the antiseptic cream and put on 3 -4 times a day, and keept the wound open. Also give Baytril of ? based on the weight of the cat determined by the VET for a period of time given by a VET.

Re: Cat attackedthank you for the replies...Merlin is well on his way to being fully recovered from his injuries.
I feel I must say however that I am disappointed in the replies I received all telling me to see a vet. You see, I live in an EXTREMELY rural area, the type where the vet comes to you, is very expensive, and not always readily available...I certainly would have consulted a vet had I felt it necessary, but I thought I'd try here before going to all that expense. Thank you again for the advice... A Grateful Kitty Mommy
Re: Cat attackedIt would have been helpful if you had explained in the original post, where you lived and how difficult it would have been to have Merlin seen by a vet.
Whenever a cat is injured, the natural response would be to suggest he be seen by a professional. Glad to hear Merlin is recovering nicely.
