Question regarding BLOAT

Post a new topicby mpipenger on Tue Jan 06, 2009 2:47 am

I just had to put my 14 year old Siberian Husky to sleep today. Very sad moment for me. I had aquestion regarding BLOAT which was what the problem was.

Just hours beofre rushing him to the emergency vet clinic I picked him up from the kennel/vet where he was staying for a week. They said that he was sick the whole time with dirahea. They had him on Amoxi-Tabs 400mg, Flagyl - 500 MG and Centrine Tabs. When Idropped my dog off he was healthy, then I pick him up from the vet and he dies 5 hours later from BLOAT!

I am surpised by this and would like to know if there may be a connection to his visit to the vet/kennel. Why didn't they reconize this prior to me picking him up? Was the medication or combination of medication a casue of this? Should I question the vet?

Any answers you can procide would be helpfull....please disregard any typos...this has been a rough day for me and my family...we are missing our boy Dakota!

Hi and sorry for the extreme late response to your inquiry.

I am Daveyo. To answer your question here it is.

The thought that food or water is a contributing factor to bloat has been discounted many times by the Veterinary Literature. It is not known officially the cause of bloat. However, as you know I have my own ideas as to the cause. Again Immune. This group of cells known as macrophages(in the spleen) I think are responsible. To long to give you an idea of how it works but there is a drug which turns it off. REGLAN. In the old days many decades ago only surg helped to control this problem. Then came Reglan. It works to turn of the immune problem or cascade that initiated bloat and leads to dogs death. What the intiating factor is I cannot say. Hope this helps. Doc.
