Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus Syndrome

We just lost our 12 year old Golden Retriever to GDV. I had never heard of it, and was never told that a bloated belly on a dog was life threatening! He ate his food like normal and suddenly started retching as if he were going to vomit, but didn’t. If I would have known how important it was to get emergency care immediately in that situation, he may have been saved. At least I wouldn’t have the guilt knowing I waited too long. i feel the same way. my mother had a doberman who just passed away a couple days ago. My mother has been gone for 3 yrs. Why don't the vets tell the owner's about this condition? If I had known the signs Deuce would still be here and we wouldn't feel so guilty.
Something must be done to warn pet owners of this so they don't have the same heartache.
