Kitten with Leukemia

Post a new topicby smolenr on Thu May 29, 2008 11:44 am

My wife and I rescued a wonderful 6-8 week kitten that was on the side of the road. We found out that he has leukemia (had retested by a second lab). We do NOT want to put him down, unfortunately we have 3 other cats (and 2 dogs). I'm looking for opinions of others on what we can do? We have the ability to keep him secluded in the garage, but we would love to introduce him to the rest of the family eventually. Any advice?

I am sorry to hear about your kitty. I am the person who posted the question about my sick cat (check post from fkagarise). I have been discouraged because I have not been able to talk to anyone who has gone through this experience. As you probably found, most vets want to immediately put the cat to sleep.

Moochie was bitten two years ago by an affected cat. He has just become sick within the last month. I have one other cat, a tweleve year old. Since they were already living together when I found out Moochie was positive, I did not seperate them. I did have Lucy tested and then vaccinated.

I don't know what to tell you about putting all of your cats together (the dogs will be fine, this is a cat disease). I know the "experts" recommend keeping them separate. If you decide to put them together, I would have the other cats vaccinated.

I wish you luck and hopefully your kitty will never end up actually getting sick.
