Feline Lewkemia Loss

Post a new topicby N7SSO on Wed Oct 31, 2007 4:45 pm

Yesterday, we lost one of our two cats to Feline Leukemia It was a very sudden onlet of the virus. Our other cat, Lumpy, is well and happy. It seems to me that some time ago Lumpy was given the vaccine for this virus. The strange thing is that Lumpy is an indoor/outdoor cat , yet the cat that died was a totally indoor cat. My question is: should we take all the advised precautions to prevent infection to Lumpy? It seems to me the the barn door has been open for too long and it would do no good to do all of this now.
ANY THOUGHTS?

Hi, I just found this site today. I am very sorry for your loss. I have a three year old male cat who tested positive for the virus a year ago. He has been doing fine but within the last few weeks is having problems. The vet has run blood tests and they have all come back normal but he is definitely not normal at this time. Could you tell me what symptoms your cat had before passing on? I am having a very hard time finding anyone who has experienced this.
As far as Lumpy is concerned, I would make sure he is vaccinated if he goes outside at all.

Could it be possible that Lumpy, while outside, rubbed noses with an infected cat and then came
inside and rubbed noses with your poor baby you lost.... This terrible disease is spread by that sort
of contact and through salivia, and using the same litter boxes.
The 3 kittens that I had to put down with FLV,,, the first symptoms I had with them was They acted
like they had a sore throat, when they swallowed,,, they stopped eating, they were lethargic
and drank water excessivly,, and the latter stages they were so weak they could not stand up on their legs....
Hope this helps you with some information that I have experienced first hand with mine.
