About 6 or so months ago I moved into a new apartment with my one kitten and my fiance; soon after my fiance and I decided to get another cat to keep our other cat sane when we were attending our college courses. We adopted a gray male cat and named him Gir; from the beginning he seemed lethargic, but I only thought of it as being part of his personality. Gradually over time Gir seemed to develop some sort of a pot belly and constantly had a runny nose. Concerned, I took him to my hometown vet. The veterinarian performed the test, there were no worms, and told me that soem cats just had a pot belly and the reason for his runny nose was a virus that came around this time of year. I was sent on my way, with the advice to just give him time and rest. Two weeks ago, thick mucoud starting coming out of his eyes, mouth and nose; to the point where he had trouble breathing and couldn't open one eye. Horrified, I took him to the local vet in the town where my college is; she said she was 99% confident that he had FIP She said she could run a test for $50, but informed me that the test was not 100 accurate and that by judging by his symptoms, he definitely had FIP ..she also recommended putting him down. I called my fiance up, sobbing, and waited until he got to the clinic to make a decision..in the end we wound up putting our little Gir down...it was so horrible.
Not only were my fiance and I devastated, but our other cat was as well; not wanting to see her depressed, we decided to get another cat...anxious about the entire things, but wanting a full family once again. We got a 5-month old black kitten from our hometown's SPCA and named the little guy Kegan. Only having him for a day, he started developing a cold..or more so, he began to sneeze. It's only gotten worses, the sneezing's more frequent now. Both of my cats have an appointment with the vet soon to get the vaccination for FIP But I can't help but worry; when we were putting Gir down the vet mentioned that if you give a cat with FIP the vaccine, often times it makes it worse. I'm so scared and confused...I want my two cats to be protected..I want to know that they're okay and healthy..but don't have the money to get them vaccines and tests. I was just hoping for advice from you guys.
P.S.
I bleached everything my old kitten, Gir, had really come in contact with..the water and food bowls, his cat bed, and his cat toys.
