I might have a cure...We lost our beloved Connor last August to this horrible disease. While he was sick, I did hundreds of hours of research to try to help him. I found that FIP is a Coronavirus, as is SARS. There might not be a cure for FIPV but there is for SARS. It is called Cinanserin and it is a drug that was developed in the 1960 to treat mental illness. Cinanserin works with SARS because it is a protease inhibitor, meaning that it prevents the virus from replicating. SARS has a 3CL protease, so does FIPV. Unfortunately, I was too late in my discovery to help Connor, but I wish someone would look into it. I now have Cinanserin for our other cats, just in case.
Re: I might have a cure...I have just found out that our 7 month old boy Marnix has most likely contracted FIP I shall mention this drug to my vet when we take him to see her next week. I was wondering how you acquire this drug and how you would dose it? I think right now we are willing to try anything to help him.
Re: I might have a cure...Are you a veterinarian? I wouldn't put my cats on any drugs w/o consulting one.

Re: I might have a cure..."I wouldn't put my cats on any drugs w/o consulting one" Ummm, FIPV is considered to always be fatal by veteranarians and they have no treatment to offer. What exactly would you have to lose?
Re: I might have a cure...Chances are your vet will not have any information on it. I get mine from Thomas Scientific. Tocris Bioscience also has it. In the U.S., Cinanserin is not considered a drug but a research compound and is not controlled. Because it is only made in small quantities, it is VERY expensive: $115.00 for 10 mg. It comes in a small vial that looks empty, it is just a residue on the bottom. Now, I am not a veterinarian. I have no medical training at all. In fact, I am a janitor in a school. Don't take anything I say as expert advise, I push a broom for a living. However, the original 1960s research into Cinanserin reported that it took 128 mg to kill a rat. With that in mind, if I have to face FIPV again I would start dosing in the mid single digits, around 5mg. But that's only what I would do, consult your vet.
Re: I might have a cure...I should have added in my last post that I have no proof at all that this will even work. A research biologist told me that he thought it could, but that's as good as it gets. Even so, it offers more hope than the veterinarians do.
Re: I might have a cure...Thank you for your help. I will try to find get some help on dosing, the best why to administer the dose and how long to dose for. As Marnix has the dry version the only symptoms he has at the moment is loss of vision and stunted growth. Because of this I think it will be nearly impossible to tell if he has recovered. If anyone out there reading this has any ideas I would appreciate the input. Of course I will discuss this with our vet before taking any action.
Re: I might have a cure...Since FIPV has an almost 100% mortality rate, you will know if he's recovered if he is still alive years from now. I am attempting to include links to a couple of articles that you might want to print out and show your vet. They might help him (and you) to understand the concept of how cinanserin effects a coronavirus. The one article is written by scientists for scientists and contains a great deal of medical jargon, but is worth taking the time to understand so you can talk about it with him. That is much better than 'some guy on the internet told me about this'. The other is about the effects of Cinanserin, which is another coronavirus. If you pursue this, please keep me up to date whith what is going on. Our Connor has been gone for 8 months now but I am just as passionate about it as ever. Anyway, here's the first link: http://jvi.asm.org/cgi/content/full/79/11/7095
other linkhttp://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2005-06-20-sars_x.htm Also, in my last post I left out some words. The 5th sentence should read; The other is about the effects of Cinanserin on SARS, which is another Coronavirus
Re: I might have a cure...jnz
I will do some fast research on this and let you know if it works or not. I do know already of a serum that we have made cures most cats diseases even FIPV negating the problem and death sentence. I will make a report on this shortly concerning this serum. In the meantime thanks for the heads up on your research. This one was sort of overlooked. One never knows. As of now Canine Distemper is fully curable. Progress is being made now about average every 2-3 months. Daveyo
