Vaccine for FIV?I was just reading the information on FIV and it stated that there is a vaccine that may help prevent a cat from getting the disease but didnt give the name of the drug.
we have a 501c3 status and an animal sanctuary. Our cats never go outside. And, we have always taken a new one to the vet before it is brought in and put with the others. They get their shots & are neutered or spayed. One of the cats had an infection and we were told he needed to have some teeth pulled. When a blood test was done prior to the dental work, it showed he had FIV or "cat aids". I called the vet we use on a regular basis and was told that none of the cats had ever been tested for leukemia or FIV they dont test unless you ask for the test specifically. I was shocked. I then called the low cost shot clinic where we sometimes go & was told the same thing. Now we dont know what to do. we are trying to figure out which cat came to us infected. I think this is an out rage that the vet does not tell people about this. we just took it for granted he understood how many animals we had and we were bringing them to him to insure they were safe to put with the other cats. So now we are going to test each cat & try to separate them. But I would like to know the name of the vaccine mentioned in the article. Interferon is a drug for the immune system. we have one cat who has rhinotracheitis(herpes) and she is on interferon and also clavamox but she is chronic and lives in isolation away from other cats. thanks for any help you may offer. gailarden (LakeCountry Animal Sanctuary)
