FeLV/FIV=Death in the family

We had four beautiful, loving cats in our family. There was Ducky (tabby), Charlie (Norwegon forest cat), Ozzy (mix), and Stuppy (Siamese,Calico). We loved them with all our hearts. Spoiled rotten! All of our cats are rescue cats, and Ducky was new to the family. We accepted Ducky into the family because I had thought I found a home for him (they changed their mind), but we were unaware that he was infected with a cancerous disease.

It is unclear in your posting, and i think you need to clear this up, is Ozzy infected with both FeLV and FIV or just one or the other. I say this because while FeLV is quite contaigious, FIV takes a deep penetreting bite wound in most cases to transmit. I have an FIV positive cat and he has not transmitted any disease to my other cats.

I agree with Janice. I have a FIV+ cat that has been with me for 5 years and not transmitted it to any of my others. FeLV is highly contagious and a whole different ballgame than FIV. Also, what type of test was used. In -house tests are notorious for coming up with false-positives: meaning that they come back as a positve for FIV when in reality they are not. Sending out for a comprehensive panel is the way to go.
