HELP my cat is very sick

Post a new topicby tandemreiser on Sun Jan 06, 2008 4:02 pm

I am new to the forum here, and I am glad you ARE here...my 2 cats got vaccinated for rabies last Nov 29.

About a week later my smaller female got a cold, it got worse, and after a few days I treated her with a little levaquin, which seemed to help emmensely. (the other cat is fine)

I thought she was ok, but I realized that the sound I thought was the two cats fighting at feeding time, tho I have 3 separate feeders for them, wasn't them fighting, it was my cat choking and sort of growling and having a bit of a fit not being able to eat...

I realized that after I saw her trying to eat with the other cat not around.

So, being hard to catch, it was a few more days before she was at the door meowing, which she NEVER does, and I was able to bring her inside.

I cleaned off her nose and eyes, and around her mouth. I cleaned up where she had been wiping herself on her legs and paws. She smells a lot better but is worse. She was given amoxicillin 2 days, rec vet dose, and also I syringe fed her water, chicken broth, some L-Lysine (not much) and am trying to keep her hydrated.

She is struggling to breathe. She is wrapped up warm, and is inside, but hasn't moved since this morning. She was having siezure like activity this morning. I bundled her in a warm towel and she calmed down.

So now, yellow and pinkish smelly stuff is leaking out of her mouth and nose. Her tongue is hanging out a bit, her breathing is very labored. I keep her hydrated with about 10cc of very watery chicken broth, and water, every few hours.

I have no idea what is going on with her.

Her mouth seems to be sore, and seems to have blisters in it.
She is one sick kitty.

I am financially challanged, and usually try to take care of the animals myself...or with the advice of a vet (I have horses etc...) and am not unfamiliar with using antibiotics...
So I am thinking she has pneumonia.
Does anyone know the proper dosage for levaquin for a cat? The vet only would say it was safe to give.

I don't want to make things worse, and if its possible to treat her at home I will...
So can any of you respond with your best guess and best thing to do, for me.
I really am scraping the bottom already this month, and medical expenses for myself..
so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear what you're going through - with blisters on the tongue, sounds like it could be felines herpes or feline chlamydiosis. Can't really offer any suggestions other than go on-line and google those, see what you can find out. Good luck.

I love my cats dearly and would do whatever I could to keep them leading comfortable lives. You have gone way to far in keeping this poor kitty alive. The most important thing you can do for a very sick animal is to be kind and put it down. You can't be selfish at a time like this. I know, I've had to do it several times and it is never easy but keeping them in a state of being unable to breath and the other symptoms you mention is not fair to them.
