FIP and FHVHello
Our cat's name is Esspresso. About six weeks ago we noticed he had lost a significant amount of weight in a short period of time. We brought him to the vet and he diagnosed Feline infectious peritonitis - FIP after doing multiple organ biopsies and noting clinical symptoms. He was prescribed prednisilone and an appetite stimulant. After about two weeks the cat wasn't doing much better and the vet decided to give him an injection of prednisone (lasts six weeks). About four or five days after that Espresso developed runny eyes and sneezing and seemed to be stoned all the time. Vet prescribed lysine. Vet said it was feline herpes virus due to the immune suppression. Vet has run two sets of blood tests at one week apart and the results are completely normal. He said he didn't think it was FIP but Espresso didn't do much better so vet decided he needed 24 hour care and Esso has been there for 5 days. He is not eating much, seems stoned all the time, has a mild. fever. Vet today says he is not sure if it is FHV and wants to run some more tests in case it is chlamydia and he should be on a different antibiotic. I know antibiotics don't work with viruses and I don't understand why the vet didn't confirm FHV when the cat has been there for the last five days. Also now the vet says it might be FIP We are having difficulty knowing what to do. Today espresso is still looking stoned and has a slight fever and is very lethargic. We want to bring him home but the vet says his concern is dehydration. They currently give him a shot subcutaneously for this. Any thoughts.
