Feline Aggression

Can anyone help me?
A few days after my garage sale my neutered male began fiercly attacking my female while making frightening vocalizations, the likes of which I had never heard before. They had always been loving toward each other.
I have separated the two and consulted my vet who gave me a series of behavior mondifcations to try. It has been 2 weeks with no success.
I must travel for business and am afraid to leave them in the care of someone else.
My vet has suggested Amiltriptyline (sp.)
