Significant Heart Murmur???okay, i just bought a wonderful beagle/dachsund mix. i purchased her at 6 weeks and things have been great until we went to the vet for her checkup and found out that she has a grade 4 heart murmur. the vet told us that many small breed dogs have murmurs and outgrow them, but she is worried about the grade of the murmur. we set up a checkup for next month and the vet told us that if the murmur is still present that an ultrasound will be necessary to dtermine the cause. she told us signs to be wary of and so far we have noticed that our puppy (Ruby)sleeps much of the day. We put her to bed around 10PM everyday and she doesnt wake up until 6:30-7AM. She also plays like a normal puppy but takes 1-3 hours long naps many times during the day. She also lays down while playing and eating treats. These are things dr. gwen told us to watch out for. Do we have a big worry here? are these normal or related to the murmur? info please!? THANKS!
Re: Significant Heart Murmur???Hi,
Our purebred Collie had a heart murmur as a puppy and didn't outgrow it until she was almost a year old. Puppies do tend to sleep a lot and then have incredible bursts of energy. Does she ever have a bluish tint to her tongue? I would watch for easy fatigue, blue tongue, and collapse during exercise. Hopefully she will grow out of this.
