My Dog Has an Odd GrowthI noticed yesterday that my dog has a growth just to the side of his urethra. It looks almost like a blood blister, but the color is not dark like blood blisters and looks almost viscous inside. I did squeeze it to see if perhaps it was a blister or a ingrown hair, and the growth seems solid. HELP!! I don't know what this is and don't want to jump the gun and run to the vet. He is a 18 month old great dane. He is fixed. He is also my baby, and I am very worried. I have a picture of it, but I do not see where to post that. Please let me know if you have seen anything like this.
Re: My Dog Has an Odd GrowthYou're probably better off presenting this to your vet for an examination. It is nearly impossible to tell what a skin mass is from a photo. Your vet may be able to take a small sample with a fine needle aspirate for a cytological exam to determine what this is and what the next step should be.
I don't think you can post photos here, but if you have a web site or other way to post the phot online, I'd be happy to look--but you are probably best off seeking a local vet who can aspirate this. Re: Re: Re: My Dog Has an Odd GrowthOK, I had a look...I do think you need to have this aspirated (or even just removed and biopsied) It is impossible to tell what it is, but I'd be a little worried that this might be a mast cell tumor. These are sometimes benign and sometimes are very aggressive and malignant, especially in this area. If it is a MCT, your vet should be able to tell very quickly by looking at an aspirate in house (or he can send the slide out to whatever lab he uses)

Re: My Dog Has an Odd GrowthWe had a similar problem. Our G-Doodle had excruciating pain on her left front paw and when I examined the paw I saw a large red blister on top of her middle toe. The Vet lanced it and we are soaking it and giving here antibiotics and Metacam. The vet thinks it was an ingrown hair but did look to see if she had a sliver or something else that might have caused it. This developed from being ok to not being able to put any weight on this foot in less than 24 hours. Does the ingrown hair thing make sense?
