Severe Allergic Reaction to Distemper ShotMy almost 12 week old Yorkie pup had her 2nd round of preventative shots today - the parvo mist through the nose & then the distemper shot...seconds later she let out a sad noise, urinated then fell limp. They quickly revived her giving her Benedryl among other fluids. They told me she went into anaphalactic shock, a severe allergic reaction to the shot. Just my luck, as my daughter has a severe allergy to peanuts and would have the same reaction if she ingested them! This can't be happening to my dog also! I was told to watch her closely today, and she will be fine, but never able to rcv shots again. Only rabies after she is 6months....I'm curious to know how many others this has happened to???
Re: Severe Allergic Reaction to Distemper ShotYou have a Yorkie Dog. It is the Parvo that the dog reacted to and is one of the breeds that have problems with Parvo Vaccine. Please do not put this in the Nose of the dog. It has nothing to do with the Distemper vaccine. Giving Parvo and Distemper is a bad combo for a Yorkie.
I suggest to keep those shots separated. Unfortunately do not use Parvo again. Hmmmm, I will consult my expert to see if there is any way you can protect your dog against parvo. If your dog gets the parvo disease the odds are not very good, however it can survive if Tamiflu is used with a lot of IV. In most cases these dogs die so you are lucky.
Re: Severe Allergic Reaction to Distemper ShotHave you had personal experience with this? Do you have a Yorkie that also had the same reaction? Do you know what is in the Parvo that bothers them??? No one I talk to has ever heard of anything like this.
Re: Severe Allergic Reaction to Distemper ShotI seem to know a Doctor and his name is Doctor SEARS who is retired and he has treated a few cases or more concerning this issue.
You can write to him at antidistemper@aol.com There is a list somewhere that tells what dogs are vulnerable to the Parvo and why , and one of them is the Rot dog, Doberman etc because it is suspected it is missing some kind of genetic trait to accept this vaccine. I also saw Yorkie on this list as well, and when I saw your note here, I decided to help you as much as I can. The real deal people will not tell you that Parvo and Distemper is a bad combo to start but it is ok to do so. Just like Polio shots, one is injectable and the other is oral, and in that situation, it seems the Oral dosages has the most problems whereas the injectable is much safer - and in USA it is all injectable cause the Doctors in USA know better - but they push the oral in Nigeria and many end up with the disease and now in a wheel chair. >>>> go figure I am having personal experiences with Distemper on the dogs. And having a personal debate with someone in pushing him to do something to make it better for all and advance medical science. As of Parvo, NO, and I most certainly hope to not ever experience the situation, however I do know that from this Doctor Sears, Parvo disease can be treated with Tamiflu, and antibiotics, and lots of IV to the animal and it will make it. Yes this Disease can be fatal if not treated right away, but timing and early treatment is essential. Right now I am in a location where there is no Tamiflu available., and sitting in a hotbed area where there is a large outbreak of DISTEMPER going on possibly PARVO, and also the BIRD FLU which is also dropping birds and dogs alike and RABIES in so many places. The other thing that is well known is if the animal has had too many vaccinations, it is known to cause the virus to mutate to a different strain and still will kill the animal. I tell you Canine Distemper is very frightening and probably the BIGGEST AND GRAVEST THREAT TO ALL ANIMALS. The power of this Disease is way far more dangerous than Rabies. It is also known even if the dog has been vaccinated and protected, and if it is done too many times, YES the dog can still get Distemper but the strain of the distemper will be different. I hope to be in an area where it is safer for my 12 Dachshunds in the near future thus not have to be forced to constantly give vaccinations every year. Again, Doctor Sears can explain to you better why the Yorkie is one of the several dogs on the list that has lots of trouble with Parvo VACCINE. Researchers believe it has something to do with the genetic traits on the dog>>> Good luck
