Puppies with Distemper - HELP

Post a new topicby Dixiebell on Tue Jun 02, 2009 4:55 pm

We foster for a rescue group. On April 25th we received a litter of 6 puppies 6 weeks old all less than 2 lbs. Within 24 hours 1 became unable to sleep or lay down, he was in apparent pain. We though his back was hurt. The rescue group picked him up and took him to the vet where it was determined he had distemper He died after 3 weeks in puppy ICU. 2 days later the 2 smallest puppies became sick. They would not eat. We bottle fed them every 3 hours and gave them subq fluids but they developed breathing problems and starting walking in circles and running into things. The rescue group picked them up and they died the next day. So I have 3 left. 1 is fine and has has 2 sets of shots and is now 101/2 weeks old. There was another the biggest of the litter who always had the green nose and green discharge from his eyes but never acted sick. Then 2 days ago he woke up and could not walk. His eyes are so bad we have to prey them open with warm water so he can see and he had a horrible ear infection (we are treating with antibiotics but not sure if helping). He has sores on his mouth and skin that started to develop yesterday. He was 4 lbs 6 ounces 2 days ago but is down to 4lbs 2 ounces. We are force feeding him through a large syringe the AD diet and also have added goats milk to his diet. The other female has been sick for 3 weeks, She was up to 3 lbs but now down to 2lbs 3 ounces. We feed her formula through a syringe and give her lots of nutracal. She will not eat. Her eyes got bad 2 days ago and she has pus coming from them. I feed her every 3 hours. She does not seem to have the neurological effects although she does shake all the time. She has developed mange and her hair is falling out. The vet said we can't treat it as she is to sick. They are on antibiotics and taking the little sprinkles (the holistic med for distemper). I need help - do they have a chance. Should I keep trying or am I needlessly putting then through too much pain. I would appreciate any advice.

Hi Dixiebell

yes you can treat these puppies and since they are less than 12 weeks, you need to use the serum for them. We do have serum and its available. Contact me at my site at caninedistemper dot proboards dot com.

I will set you up so you can get the serum directly pronto, and will tell you how to administer the dosages in giving the serum for the pups.

Since the pups are very young, you cannot use the NDV in this case since they are not body developed regarding their immune system. For the neurological part, yes you can use NDV to stop the disease affecting them.

You have to act fast, so make contact to me immediately.

I will wait for you on the other side. Sound good.

Hi Dixie

I need to know your location and also I will direct you to my assistant Pip from my site as she pretty much knows how to treat Mange on dogs and the ear infections. She is also in direct line with Dr. Muller too.

My name is Jamie and I am in Chino California and can administer the serum as I am an RN. I did already order the NDV but it did not come yet. (should come tomorrow) But it was cheap so no harm done. Would they need the spinal fluid treatment if the serum works. Please let me know where to get the serum. Do you need my phone number!!!

I lost a 3 month old blue healer last year to distemper. My vet and I tried to save him with supportive care, but it progressed so fast. Over the winter I got Hanna , my Harrier hound. She was completely vaccinated , and healthy at one year old. This month she spiked a 106 fever and we had her tested. The results where positive for distemper. I live on a resort in Wy and my home has frequent night vistors such as fox, wolves ect. We suspect a very strong virus in this area. Since Hanna was positive we choose to treat her with amoxicillin and tamaflu. Yes Tamaflu for the swine flu. We are not seeing any progression of the distemper. Keeping Hanna well fed and hydrated along with the meds and lots of sleep seems to be working.

Greetomgs

Treating for Distemper with antibiotics will not help at all but help the pneumonia that is being caused by distemper. For Pneumonia we use Baytril and Penicillin G mixed together and injected to the muscles.

You will need NDV to cure your animal of this disease body wise. After day 6 the virus will enter the CNS and when that happens you will need to have a CSF tap to be done using NDV again to cure it in the CNS region.

NDV will not cross the blood brain barrier like Distemper virus does. It is a two step process to eliminate this virus completely. If done early and quickly the less damage the residual damage will be on the dog itself.

Feel free to go to my site at caninedistemper dot proboards dot com and register there and once in you will find all the data you need pertaining to the disease and I can be of some help to you as well.

Hope to see you there
