New puppy w/symptoms#3 weeks ago I adopted a dachsund/beagle puppy from the pound. He was in the pound for one day. The day after I adopted him, a newspaper report came out that the shelter had distemper and were discontinuing all adoptions. He was a fireball from the minute we got him home. The puppy had the 7 in 1 shot and is due for his next shot, but 3 days ago he started acting very lethargic. He started limping on his left leg and now can not stand up very long at all without his hind end falling over. I took his temperature tonight and he has 102 degrees. He is eating and drinking when forced - but mostly lies around and wimpers, tries to walk and can not get up, and is generally miserable. He has not had any nasal discharge but his breathing is labored. He had a terrible case of worms and we have wormed him with regular wormer and I just finished day 3 of a wormer for all types of worms. Could this be an illness from the worms or could he possibly have distemper Appreciate your help
Re: New puppy w/symptomsHi I am Daveyo
Please get your puppy to the VET immediately and do this test to confirm Distemper. How old is this pup and when did you get it????? When did you give that first vaccination shot??????? The very best test for rapidly diagnosing ACUTE distemper is to do what is called a brush border smear of the cells of the inside lining of the bladder. These cells ALWAYS have inclusions. So, easy to collect, easy to stain (quick dip) and instantly diagnosed with inclusions in these cells which are carmine red and para nuclear. Any medical person can tell you how to get cells from the bladder. Urinary catheter. Empty bladder flush with saline and collect some of the last saline. Spin down the saline and remove the cells. Place on slide and dry stain with diff-quick. Very common stain used by most medics or lab people who use medical microscopy. Everyone? I should hope so. Very fast, very cheap, very accurate for Dx of distemper. If present then Distemper. If negative then either kennel cough or respiratory Herpes or Toxoplasmosis. In the meantime right now your puppy has pneumonia in the lungs. Generally this is caused by Distemper but again you also mentioned worms at the same time. So we have a double whammy ongoing right now. Med reaction maybe and again maybe not. Do that test first please by all means. DO NOT GIVE ANY VACCINATION SHOT NOW BECAUSE YOUR DOG IS SICK. This test is 100% accurate. Quick and not expensive and you can get your answer in about 30 minutes. If confirmed Distemper since you mentioned the newspaper clipping, then you need to find NDV immediately. I suspect you are in the east coast of USA????? If so there is a source near you and can be shipped out if you not able to find NDV. You can find NDV at any Agriculture Poultry store or you can call the Agriculture Dept and ask where such is sold at, and or ask any chicken farmer nearby you and they can also tell you where to get some. NDV is Newcastles Disease Virus Vaccine, and get the LaSorta strain. It also comes with a diluent. First you need to do the body and inject to the blood vein of the dog prefer the front leg just below the elbow and above the paw wrist. The Dx is 0.1cc for every pound the dog weighs and if between add another 0.1cc. Once you give this injection in the blood vein the cure for Distemper in the body takes 24 hours. To treat for pneumonia you need to give Baytril of 0.5cc and penicillin G 1.0cc mixed together and inject to the muscle area in the rear of the dog. This must be done every 12 hours for 7 days. Pneumonia needs to be taken care of immediately. Do not get this dog wet at all OK. After this and during this time period keep a close eye on the puppy. I need to know those answers to the above questions on the top ASAP to determine if the disease breached the CSF, and need to know the rest of the symptoms and THE TEST RESULTS. I also want to know the WBC count. That alone tells me the immune system of the dog. This can go either of the 3 ways so it is very important to provide me the above answers quickly. Either your dog got the disease being at the pound or either your dog got the disease from the vaccination shot or your dog got sick with distemper and the vaccination shot aggravated this condition and brought it on very fast. Right now I suspect you had this dog for a spell. Please check the pads of the dog> is it hard like wood or not, do check the eyes of this dog> any goop on it, and tell me the stool condition of this dog> is it very soupy and smelly. Also check the hydration of this dog. You can tell by pulling the skin back and it should snap back which is normal. If it sticks then your dog is getting dehydrated. At this point it is getting dangerous and the dog is running out of fluids in the body. If no distemper is present, then your dog most likely has respiratory herpes and this is treatable by antibiotics and or by NDV. You can use NDV but remember once you give it to the dog, you can only give it just one time. After that you have used the one and only last option, and you cannot give it to that dog again. NDV is to be used as a last resort preferred and reserved especially for Distemper. The serum can be used against respiratory herpes and also kennel cough and can be used more than once for most diseases. This should be your first option but if no serum is available then NDV again is the last resort. You may go to Dr. Sears and my site at www.caninedistemper.proboards60.com and register there and look for Canine Distemper. Here you will find all the information you need and also find the medical protocol to cure this disease as well as the others and you can copy the medical protocol and give to your vet for him to follow up on it. Do not alter this medical protocol as it being the best method and the correct way to treat the diseases and the success rate is 99%. Dr Sears has saved over 600 plus dogs and I was the one who discovered the cure in the CSF thus completing the the entire distemper disease itself to a FULL CURE. As of the worm condition, please check it carefully since worms are dangerous to dogs and it comes from mosquitoes. You need to treat this dog carefully and regulate the worm medication properly to get the best results. The falling down that you mention indicates neuro problems and this is caused by Distemper and that means the Disease has breached the CSF requiring a NDV-CSF tap to be done. The falling down indicates paralysis onset. This is why you must get that test done quickly and tell me all the other details. It is absolutely essential to cure this dog of yours. OK If you have any questions feel free to contact me here or at Dr. Sears and my site. Daveyo
