New to forums? Learn More Before Getting Started Canine DistemperHelp! Daveyo Pls read my posting at ProboardsMy 3 yr old, male cocker spaniel dog was diagnosed with distemper last July 23. I've read you protocol and had NDV body injection. It's been 34 hours and my dog hasn't shown signs of recovering yet. It's still has eye discharges. The IV was stopped 10 hrs ago (overnight) till now because his hind leg is swelling. The 2 front legs don't accept IV insertion anymore. Last night, 24 hrs after his ndv injection i noticed muscle twitching of one hind leg. It wasn't here before. Do I need to wait for 7 days after ndv injection for csf tap or do it soon? My vet is still looking for somebody to do it since she hasn't done it before. The paralysis rating is in 25 in your chart. I'm in the Philippines and had also contacted Dr. Loubinar. He has helped me a lot but sometimes I don't want to bother him so much. It's good to have more sources. Please check the case I posted in your website. The one at 10:30. I'm in page 2.
Thank you so much. Venus
Re: Help! Daveyo Pls read my posting at ProboardsContact Dr. Loubinar now. He knows how to do the CSF tap.
Your dog is having ODE right now. Disregard the body injection. You must do the CSF tap. This must be done IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY. The dog is having paralysis. I will go to the other site Will reach you. Daveyo
Re: Help! Daveyo Pls read my posting at ProboardsHi Daveyo,
I've called Dr. Loubinar but he is so far from where I live. I'm in another island, 45 min plane from Manila and Dr. Loubinar needs to travel around 18 hrs to go to Manila. My lady vet have agreed to do csf. She just called me this morning. She had never done this before but I told her I can get the two of them (Dr.Loubinar) to confer first before she will do the procedure. She had instructed me to prepare the ndv. She had also administered Baytril and Penicillin G this morning. They put the IV back this morning and she said my dog seems stronger because he tried to resist on everything she does. But I thought maybe it's because of the central nervous system? I do hope it's something good, though. Will keep you posted. Thanks a lot.
Re: Help! Daveyo Pls read my posting at ProboardsHold it, did you say that this person has never done a CSF tap?????
You must find a person who has done these taps before and is certifiably trained. If that needle goes in too far, or it is misplaced that needle alone will kill the animal. It has to be put in just so much and just at the right angle and at the right place on the spinal cord at (the cerebral cranial cavity known as the foramen magnum just below the back part of the skull) or its bye bye to that dog. Double check on the VETS experience. Write back pronto. Daveyo
Re: Help! Daveyo Pls read my posting at ProboardsYes, she has never done it. What can I do?She had tried to call her other vet friends but they've never done it as well. The last person she tried to approach is a government vet who is head of the veterinary dept and is well versed with the head part but he is going to Manila and will be back on Monday.
Re: Help! Daveyo Pls read my posting at ProboardsHi Daveyo,
I think BIBZ's vet was also first timer on the procedure. My vet is working full time with 2 clinic branches. She was also a lecturer at a veterinary school before. In fact one of the vets in the former clinic where my dog was admitted was her student. I feel I can trust her.
Re: Help! Daveyo Pls read my posting at ProboardsKeep looking for a VET who has CSF experience. If that VET who never did such before I am almost guaranteed the dog will die.
When VETS train for CSF taps it takes about 10 times before they finally get it right. All 10 of those dogs had to be expired because when they woke up the results were devastating. This is how they get trained. When they get it right, they will know when the dog wakes up and looks fine and everything else, then they got the CSF tap correct. The dog lives and is free to go. Daveyo This is what is going to happen if you let that VET who never did it before. The chances for the dog to survive from an inexperience vet doing their first CSF is 1% Just so you know. You best bet is to travel to Manila and See Dr. Loubinar. He has the experience to do this procedure.
Re: Help! Daveyo Pls read my posting at ProboardsThis is really frustrating. My dog would not be able to withstand an 18 hr ride from Manila to Benguet. That place is mountainous. Moreover, we don't have enough money to spend for the travel arrangement with a sick dog which would take 21 hrs minimum since we have to fly to Manila. I've tried inviting Dr. Loubinar to come here but he couldn't. I was also thinking of BLITZ's doc. He was able to do the procedure successfully. But I don't know that doctor's name. I remember you asked for his name while you were still in that case. Did BLITZ give it to you? I posted something for BLITZ but I got no response.
I guess we'll just have to go on with the procedure. We'll take the 1% chance. It's the only thing we've got. Thanks. Venus
