feedback on distemper

Post a new topicby annejames on Tue Sep 16, 2008 2:01 pm

Hi,

I was looking for some feedback on distemper. I have a puppy that has survived distemper so far, but has developed really thickened hard pads that seem to be painful when he walks and runs and plays on them. Is there anything that can be done? Will the pads wear down over time and become less painful? If anyone had been through this or knows what to expect, could you please reply? Thank you so much!

Hi I am Daveyo

As for the pads on the dogs feet. You have to put on a lot of lotion and vaseline on it to first get the outer layer soft. Once you do that then you have to carefully peel it off bit by bit. It might take you a few months. The problem is it is hard like wood and very difficult to get off. Now if it was a thin layer like mine was, I peeled it off of three dogs, and today they have normal pads, and it is supple.

How I did it was the same and took a magnifying glass and used a sharp tweezers and looked for the weak parts and the cracked open parts and pull it off slowly and gently. That is how I did it.

I know of no other way to get it off except for specific VET surgery and that can be expensive.
