Distemper

Post a new topicby kperez on Tue Jan 29, 2008 8:04 pm

Hi all,
My E.D. is 16 weeks old. She is now twitching only in her front right leg, has seizures, and sometimes stumbles when she walks. She spent the night at the vet's last night. They gave me permission to take her home today. The vet seems to think "we won against the virus". Did we? He prescribed half of phenobarbital twice a day. What do you think? I really want to be prepared. We've only had her a month and already we are in love with her. She's eating well, but does not want to play.
Thanks

H.
I wanted to add to this post. She has no soupy stools. No vomiting. And still eats like a horse. She is weighing in at 29 pounds. Still, I am wondering what stage she's in. Thanks.

No you have not won, the Canine Distemper Virus is winning and it will kill your dog unless you follow up on the post that I have made here to save dogs from Canine Distemper.

You need to do all this very quickly. Your dog is going to be paralyzed shortly and the seizures itself will kill the dog.

First do this: The very best test for rapidly diagnosing ACUTE distemper is to do what is called a brush border smear of the cells of the inside lining of the bladder. These cells ALWAYS have inclusions. So, easy to collect, easy to stain (quick dip) and instantly diagnosed with inclusions in these cells.

Any medical person can tell you how to get cells from the bladder. Urinary catheter. Empty bladder flush with saline and collect some of the last saline. Spin down the saline and remove the cells. Place on slide and dry stain with diff-quick. Very common stain used by most medics or lab people who use medical microscopy. Everyone? I should hope so. Very fast, very cheap, very accurate for Dx of distemper. If present then Distemper. If negative then either kennel cough or respiratory Herpes.

If this is confirmed on the body side, then you need to have the VET do the NDV injection to the blood vein to stop the disease inside the body. Right after you get this done 24 hours later then have the VET do the CSF-NDV tap to the Foramen Magnum ( the bottom part of the skull direct to the Spinal Stem close to the Brain area. I have also put the post here under Canine Distemper.

The body part will cure. But not the CNS (Central Nervous System). What the NDV will do in the CNS is stop the progression of the disease from going any further and killing the dog. Basically arresting it. After that it is up to the dog and its genetics to heal on their own, because you are having a demyelination problem which is causing a double hit, one for seizures and the other for paralysis. Understand. You might end up with a dog completely paralyzed by the time the mess stops. The seizures need to be controlled by Pheno which gives the brain time to heal. With the disease progression stopped in the CNS then hopefully the body can repair the myelin and the Schwann Cells and it is possible the dog can walk normally again.

You are welcome to visit my site at [moderator note: website address has been removed] which contains a valuable wealth of information of this Disease and explains it in quite detail and its all my work. I do it for the benefit for other people so that they can understand fully of what they are dealing with concerning this disease as well as other diseases that many think there is no cure but there is cures, and I have posted that in that website as well. Feel free to check it out and once you register you will see all of it. I also have pictures of dogs that have been cured and testimonials as well from people and they also don't mind others asking them about the cure as well.

I can only hope now that you can catch all this in time. This disease does not stop and continues until that NDV is given both for the body and in the central nervous system. Then you have won half of the victory but the disease left you with a ton of problems and destruction to that poor dog basically its after effects.

Please do post here or to the other site of mine and I will do my best to assist you if you need more information.

Thank you for responding to my post. I tried to find the vaccine at our local feed store on Monday, but was horribly out of luck. I noticed her leg twitching on Sunday night. By Thursday night she was in such pain even after giving her 3 pain pills prescribed by our vet, that we couldn't take her suffering anymore. We took her to the local emergency hospital and ended her pain.
I believe you and Dr. Sears. Dr. Sears was even kind enough to reply to my email after I read about him in your posts. I did everything I could on my end, but it went too fast for me. I am still going to give our vet the information I found by Dr. Sears. Even though our vet has experience in recognizing the symptoms of distemper, he needs to learn how to cure it.
We want to get another puppy, how long do you suggest we can safely get one? We buried her toys with her. And cleaned all the feces from the yard. We threw away rugs she had peed on. And I am going to donate all of her food and kennel to a local no-kill shelter. I cleaned her kennel with bleach. Should I clean it again with bleach?
Thank you for all your information on the previous posts. Which, by the way, I printed and gave to our vet. He didn't want to take me seriously because...I don't why.
Anyway, I will be looking forward to your response. Thank you.

Hi,
In the past year I have adopted several stay street puppies in Taiwan. My first dog I adopted a year ago is healthy and happy. She's had all 3 of her puppy shots and her rabies vaccination. She was also spayed. I then adopted another one, mean while having 2 other puppies come into my care and go when a suitable home was found. She has had all 3 of her shots and her rabies shots, and now just needs to be spayed. In December while in the park i came across a box of abandoned puppies. There were many, and I could only handle taking 2 of the box. The two puppies were first treated for any worms and were given some ear medication for an infected ear. The younger, smaller one contracted Parvoviral enteritis, and thankfully with careful care 24/7 plus the aid of an animal hospital that operates at cost only, we helped get her through it. After that, between her and the other girl, it seems to have been one thing after another, and now, after receiving 2 treatments for scabies, the vet last time I went a week ago said that they had fevers. They were given some medication for it and took it. The younger one's fever went down. The older one's fever stayed up, and the vet said that some markings on her skin looked like CDv. His English isn't that great, so I wasn't able to get much information and he told me that there is no treatment for it. I took the older one home with me to Canada, and she is now at home. She has a slight cough but it's inconsistent - not all the time. As she breathes, wetness comes out of her nose. Her tummy seems to be a bit bloated. Her skin is red and a bit splotchy.
I was reading some of the items posted for CV on this website and have seen a LOT of information so I'm still trying so hard to digest it. Of course I love this little girl and don't want her to suffer the same fate I've seen many have already experienced. Please tell me directly what to do, and where to get the things I need to help her, and approximately how much time I need to allow to get those things. I know first things first - get her tested. I'll have to read the posting on whether the test is accurate. If it's positive, I think being a single young female, I'm really hoping someone can walk me through this and help me save this sweet heart rescued pup.
The most direct and very explicit help is MUCh appreciated. Everything said I will pass on to my mother who studied Micro Biology and will probably give me the most help of everyone that's physically around me.
Oh, my location is Vancouver, Canada if that helps you to let me know what I can and can not obtain here, and how long it will take for things to reach me.
Thankyou!

TO KPEREZ:

Oh boy, sorry to hear of your situation. My condolences. Hmmmm, OK lets answer some of your particular questions.

First in the meantime find yourself some Newcastle's Disease Virus Vaccine and keep it refrigerated and handy in case you come across another pup with the same condition again. Remember one set (can vary based on weight) is for the weight of the dog, and the other set (only 1 needed) is for the CSF use. I want you to cover yourself for possible Distemper and or the other diseases that this can be used on.

Secondly, make sure the floor under the rugs is cleaned with 1:30 Bleach with water solution even the kennel the dog was in. Do this at least twice. All the floors OK. Throw away any toys it had. As of the food if in cans you can keep or dry foods that was not used you can keep. First with bleach solution and then dishwashing can be used to clean all the utensils and can be used again. Do try to wash all the clothes that came in contact with your former pet at least once. As of the yard don't worry, the sunlight will kill the virus outside. Same on the furniture.

After waiting one month, then you can get another dog. Once all the other things are done, and that you have that NDV in that Fridge. Then your prepared and ready to go.

Now comes the big one. Once you get another pup PLEASE HAVE THE VET DO THIS TEST ON THAT DOG. Looking at the dog physically will not help much if the virus is in the very beginning stage. Here it is again. >>>>>

The very best test for rapidly diagnosing ACUTE distemper is to do what is called a brush border smear of the cells of the inside lining of the bladder.

If NEGATIVE then either kennel cough (Most likely) or respiratory Herpes (if a puppy).

Then do not compromise on the vaccinations. Keep in mind those vaccination shots are really set for a 60 pound dog, so if you give this to a small animal, they will get hit hard. I prefer 1/2 shots every 10 days which gives the dog a chance to handle it and build up their immune system.

Last and most important make sure that dog has a blood test done and do check the WBC. If healthy it should be high near the 17.0 range. If it is around 9 to 12, (be suspicious of it being sick) get some Nupogen and give it 0.1cc to boost it either once or twice. Very important to have the WBC high especially against possible diseases the puppy can catch. This is their immune response factor. The higher the better.

Other than that you should be OK. Do the Deworming and give it the heartguard once a month and your dog can live a long time healthy.

However, it is known even animals who are well vaccinated, they can still get Distemper (rare) but it does happen and don't over-do the vaccinations. After you get done with all the shots and the Rabies and Kennel Cough (injectible form) then do the vaccinations every 2-3 years - not yearly. OK The vaccines today are quite strong. In my site I have it all listed out at [moderator note: website address has been removed] and it is all there.

OK, thats about it. You should be fine. Oh up to the VET if he wants to make that serum. It will really do him a lot of good and he can save a lot of dogs if he or she really is serious. That serum is a lot better as I know of right now. But it takes time to make it and find the right dog to get such extracted. That is also there too how to make it.

To PRINCESSCARA:

First thing you need to do is get both Dogs to the VET ASAP. Get this test done most importantly.>>>>

The very best test for rapidly diagnosing ACUTE distemper is to do what is called a brush border smear of the cells of the inside lining of the bladder. These cells ALWAYS have inclusions. So, easy to collect, easy to stain (quick dip) and instantly diagnosed with inclusions in these cells.

Very fast, very cheap, very accurate for Dx of distemper. If present then Distemper. If negative then either kennel cough or respiratory Herpes.

Secondly have the dog tested for GDV. (the one with tummy swelling) If confirmed give REGLAN which responds best to dogs of this condition. Don't ask it just works OK.

Thirdly do a blood test to check for other conditions especially the WBC if the dogs have Distemper and diseases, and do check for heartworms and parasites in the intestinal track.

If confirmed Distemper, then hit the phone books and try to find it via a agriculture Poultry store. They usually have the NDV. If not call the agriculture Department and ask them where such is sold. Don't tell them you need it for a dog, do tell them you need it for your chickens. Saves you a lot of explaining to those people. Your objective is to find the NDV ASAP >>>>OK

Keep in mind you need to get two sets > one set for the body injections based on the weight of the animal. The second set is only for the CSF if needed (just one vial only). If both dogs have it, then you need to have another set of same for the other dog as well.

If confirmed with Distemper do the body injection right then and there and don't wait. If both dogs have it do it on both of them.

Then wait 7-10 days and then have the VET do the CSF tap injection. (only if confirmed Distemper)

Also find yourself some Nupogen if the dogs WBC is way down due to the virus. You need to get it up and have it near 17.0 for best response regarding their immune system.

DO NOT VACCINATE THESE DOGS RIGHT NOW. BOTH ARE SICK SO GET THEM CURED FIRST -ok

If the VET cannot do all these things, then find one who can and also one that can do the CSF tap as well. Don't mess around. Start the calling and do your searching FAST.

Your on a time clock right now. I estimate you have used up nearly 3 weeks on the dogs without treatment. Max is 5 weeks for most dogs and they expire.

Keep posting and let me know what is going on.

Good luck.

Thankyou very much! I'll get on it right in the morning. First things first - call all the vets in my city and find out who can do the canine distemper test, and pick the one that will administer the Newcastle part that's usually only thought of as for chickens, and also to the spinal tap. I'll also get her thoroughly checked over for anyother parasites and intestinal things, and will take a hard copy of what you posted for me to the vets office. I'm very excited that there may be a chance to save her if she has CDV. When the vet in Taiwan told me that the youngest one had Parvo - and that she would likely die from it I just broke down. I call her Bear because she's a lil teddy Bear. She got through that. She got through scabies treatments, and she also got through some other things that I dont' really know fully what they were. When the vet told me a week ago she might have CDV I couldn't even speak. Now that i'm across the ocean from her, it's up to my kid brother to get her into the vet, or at least into the emergency animal clinic. It's up to my boyfriend now to get the vet to acquire the neccessary items. I just hope he can understand what I sent to him. I have more peace of mind now about the older dog that I have here (who's about 3.5 - 4 months, a mix breed of local Taiwanese dog and the African basenji).
I have one more question, though this is probably best directed at the vets who have treated the dogs that are living with me. I need to find out if they were vacinated against CDV, and if they were, if that is 100% sure that they cannot contract CDV. My younger sister would be devistated if her older dog, Carmel, who lives with my family in Canada had CDV.
Thanks again, and I'll tell you an update hopefully tomorrow afternoon!!!

Re: Distemper

To PRINCESSCARA:
I believe I already covered the part of about the Vaccinations. It does happen on occasion even with a dog fully vaccinated against Distemper do get Canine Distemper. Keep in mind a virus will mutate itself. There are 3 known strains of Canine Distemper, and one of those strains is really a bad apple and it really does a lot of damage. All the virus in the Canine Distemper family is MEASLES. Dogs on the other hand when they catch the measles it is extremely very deadly to them. Animals do not have the kind of immune system like the humans have which for the most part can handle it, yet it can also be fatal to humans as well.

To ask a VET to guarantee that your dog will not get Canine Distemper is like asking a fish to not bite the tuna in the sea. You have to be real here and acknowledge that a VIRUS is all around us daily even to dogs of the same. Some will get sick even though you already are protected yet the virus again like I said before mutated to a different strain.

If they were vaccinated properly the odds of dogs catching Distemper itself is less than 5%. Sometimes dogs do get Distemper from the shots itself, and a lot of times it behooves the VETS because most of the time they cannot believe that a dog can catch distemper.

Dr. Sears has saved well over 600 dogs, including 3 out of the 5 that I had that were infected with Canine Distemper. Out of the 3 dogs, I have one that is paralyzed right now, (the NDV -CSF tap stopped the progression) and technically this dog should have been dead since October last year. The other dog has seizures resulting from this Disease and also should have been dead since last October last year, and this one also got the NDV-CSF tap done as well. The third one was very lucky because I caught it inside the 4-6 day window and today is everything a normal dog can be. I could not save the other two dogs because it was too late for me on the first one and the second one could not find a VET in time that had a facility to do the CSF tap. What a bummer. Now I do have that VET.

Saving dogs on the body injection has been going on for quite a few years now. On the CSF, it is absolutely very new, and I am the first one to have entered this territory all alone and by myself in my efforts saving the dogs life.

So currently what is known as of this moment, the NDV stopped the progression and for some reason gave my two dogs a pass on the death sentence, which was very much the case that they were facing without getting the NDV. So, I dived into this medically and with all the knowledge of Dr. Sears and I had regarding this I decided to take the shot and put it to the dogs doing the CSF tap and hoped for the best. It worked.

Dr. Sears and I are working on another medical project and we are examining all the details since all of this is experimental. This is why it is not in the medical journals as of today.

Right now one of them is sitting next to me the one that is paralyzed, and the other is sleeping on the chair in front of me. They both stay close to me most of the time.

So there is a lot of work to be done in the coming months ahead, and Dr. Sears and I hope our project is a success. If it is then it will get posted sooner or later in the medical journals.

It does not take much for the CDV to infect dogs. It is also an airborne virus and can infect unvaccinated dogs as far away as 20 miles.

OK hope this answers your situation

By the way I see a new post from you.

Are you kidding yourself or what????? CDV is danger all the way till it kills your dog!!!!!! It does not stop by having the dog rest or giving it orange juice!!!!!!!! CDV does not cause a cough either. It destroys everything inside that dog and it makes a beeline straight to the CNS which is its primary target. If that dog starts to show hardening of the pads or the goop in the eyes, then you will believe me about this Canine Distemper which should be happening real soon if that dog is positive with it.

Do that test I have posted to you. If that dogs has the disease you will lose your dog courtesy of that VET. Not I.

The rest up to you. Canine Distemper disease is very smart and knows how to do its job and then when ready it really reveals itself, once it has full control of your dog.

If not Distemper then your dog never had CDV. It had another disease. So without doing the bladder smear test, your only hope is to pray that it is not Distemper, cause if it is, you will either see its horrible effects or hear about it from whoever has that dog shortly. According to your message here, your outside the safe window now, so the virus has already breached the CSF, and now your in the second stage. Soon it will be the third and final stage. Signs of labor breathing will be coming up cause Distemper affects the lungs as well and causes Pneumonia.

Once it gets to the chewing gum stage nothing will be able to save the dog. The brain is getting damaged very rapidly and death is within 3 days.

Would you like for me to describe to you in complete detail of how bad it can really get with the seizures, the breathing and everything else??????? Truly if you saw it with your own two eyes, it will shock your very well being and senses completely and even scare you to death. I went thru it with the second dog that I lost from beginning to the end. It died on my lap!!!!

Anyway the rest is up to you. I have done my best.
