Distemper Vaccine- should I listen to my vet or my breeder? My family recently got a puppy from a breeder who gave us a strict vaccine schedule to follow. We took our 9 week old puppy to the vet to get her first vaccine of parvovirus. Without our permission the vet gave her a combo vaccine of parvo and distemper We gave the vet that vaccine schedule that we got from our breeder where she explicitly stated that our puppy shouldn't be vaccinated for distemper until 19+ weeks of age. Shortly after the vaccination she had a reaction to the distemper including a loss of appetite, paralysis and fever. Our breeder told us it was a reaction to the distemper vaccine and told us to give her prednisone (steroids). The prednisone worked and she is recovering from the reaction. Now it's time for her next vaccine of parvo but our breeder told us not to vaccinate her again until she is at 19+ because she is not a healthy puppy and you should not vaccinate a puppy that is not healthy or has a weakened immune system. Our vet is insisting that she be vaccinated even though they still have her on prednisone and an antibiotic for another illness that stemmed from the distemper reaction. Should we listen to our breeder and not vaccinate her until she is 19+ weeks and keep her away from all animals until then or should we listen to our vet and give her the next vaccine?
Re: Distemper Vaccine- should I listen to my vet or my breeder?Hi Kat
Seems your caught in a catch 22 situation between two very inexperience individuals. Allow me to introduce myself. I am one of the experts on Distemper, and I can tell you this right now. Do not listen to either of them. That breeder has no idea what they are talking about and that recipe she gives to you is a recipe for a disaster. Obviously the VET is no better and vaccinates a pup with a full shot of combo which is meant for a 60 pound dog!!!! Also what is this deal with the Parvo? Who are these breeders and where are you located. Feel free to go to my site at caninedistempercure dot com, where I myself and my staff and the DVM emeritus Dr. Sears is involved in. I did have a site previously under proboards and there was an issue to a hacker and I lost everything, but lucky I backed it all up. So I decided to start my own site and now its in full swing. On the guest side you will see limit topics, but if you register make sure you give me your location and birthdate Ok In my site you will find a wealth of information pertaining to any of the diseases not only for dogs but for cats, and even injuries too. When you get there, do give me the full details, age and everything such as the breed and all the symptoms you have observed to date and the vaccination history and any CBC tests that were done.. The more detailed the information you give me the better things will be and the response to cure your pet will be just that much easier. Fair enough. It is true and its your choice but if I were you I would pick to listen to a expert on diseases and vaccines and believe me if your dog does have distemper there is a full cure and you best have that dog checked now for that disease. Why I say this 80% of the VETS are totally ignorant pertaining to Distemper and are not properly trained from their schooling and they lack basic biology knowledge. NEVER EVER BELIEVE A BREEDER. They are the biggest problems regarding dogs, and if they were intelligent enough, they would not be having sick dogs in their possession especially telling you about STEROIDS!!!! What are they thinking of here. Wheeeeeeeeww. Hope to see you there at my new site. Daveyo
