distemper in addopted shelter puppyI have a puppy that has been diagnosed with distemper When I got him from the animal shelter I brought him to the vet, and got him vacinated. He was diagnosed with kennel cough two weeks ago, and got better. Then Sunday he started having the chewing gum seizures, the vet said he wants to give him a chance because he does have some antibodies fromt he first vacination. My question, if he by the grace of god pulls through, what could be the long term affects, being this virus has hit his central nervous system?
Re: distemper in addopted shelter puppyErica,
Since you said Sunday the dog started its chewing gum seizure, this is the final and fatal stage the dog will encounter. Yes there is NDV (Newcastles Disease Virus) but the dog needs minimum 48 hours for this vaccine to work. However at chewing gum stage this is basically telling you Brain Damage is occurring and PLEASE PUT THE DOG TO SLEEP. Say good-bye to it. Even the Doctor that I am in contact with very frequently concerning distemper in dogs, has said chewing gum phase is fatal. If you had reported this earlier yes you could have saved your dog. I posted here under Canine Distemper with the Title for any cases of Distemper. Bury your dog with honors Erica. That dog sure did suffer far more than you will ever know. Bury it with the dog bones so when your time comes to leave this planet, you can at least be greeted by your friend with that dog bone in its mouth, and your friend guide you and take you to your new home. My condolences to you.
