3 Month Old Puppy Positive For DistemperI adopted a 2 month old Boxer/Pit mix from my local animal shelter and 1 1/2 weeks after she came home, she started having a real bad cough and it was almost like she was dry heaving. She finally coughed up some grass and stuff that she had eaten. The next morning when we woke up, she was still coughing and she had a greenish discharge coming from her nose. I rushed her to the vet and they did a Distemper scrape and gave her some antibiotics. She has been on the antibiotics for a week now and she is acting like a typical puppy and not like a dog that has distemper (from what I've read). Does anyone have any advise on what I can do to keep my puppy alive?
Re: 3 Month Old Puppy Positive For DistemperToDoryTheDog, First of all what makes you think this animal has Distemper???
To start with, the test they did was all wrong. Secondly the hacking cough points straight to Kennel Cough Thirdly the discharge points straight to Pneumonia Fourth one of these symptoms point straight to Canine Herpes which is similar to Canine Distemper. No mentioning here of its temp readings, vaccination history, stool situation etc. Very hard for us to help you. Have your VET continue to keep giving broad antibiotic spectrum drugs depending what they have. Also combine this with Baytril and Penicillin G. Make sure your dog eats and drinks because it will get dehydrated. From what you have described here, and without knowing its vaccination history, I very much doubt for the moment it has Canine Distemper because some of the symptoms you have described here DOES NOT RELATE to Distemper. Let us know how it comes out. Keeping your dog alive???? Hmmmmm its not dead yet right?? Well make sure the VET gives the right diagnosis and it should live.
