Another “is it distemper?â€We adopted a german shepherd-2 yr old male from a rescue organization. He was vaccinated in June & again October 18. He’s with us 6 days & starts sounding snarfy in the nose. Some mucus coming out. Off to the vet-mild fever-Amoxicillin. 5 days pass, no improvement. Green/yellow snot from the nose. Re: Another “is it distemper?â€Not distemper, the dog either has Pneumonia or Herpes. Treat immediately with Baytril and Penicillin G. Dose is dependent on the weight of the dog. Have dog stand on all legs, then tap hard on the chest couple of quick times both sides. If the dog coughs after that second tap, then its pneumonia. If not then Herpes. Monitor the temperature readings on this dog carefully. OK
See a good vet. OK If that VET suspects Distemper, then do the brush border smear test and stain with quick dip. If there are inclusions present, then distemper if not something else. Based on those blood test readings without seeing the numbers, definite infection ongoing.
