Rescue Dachshund with fear issues

Hi, I adopted a female doxie last december, great dog. She is about 5, is fearful of men, prefers women. She has exhibited mild/moderate fearfulness towards my husband. My spouse has made a consistent effort to be kind towards her and enocurage her. When he enters a room, she barks at him consistently, and I correct her. Yesterday she was on the couch, had an apple she was working on, my husband sat down next to her, came close with his face to talk to her...she lunged and snapped at him, did not break the skin but did make contact with his nose. When he approaches her in this manner she cowers, tail tucked, ears low...my impression of the incident is that he had gotten way into her personal comfort zone, pushed the wrong button inadvertently.
I have asked him to not push her like this again, as I know this could have been avoided he he not gotten into her space so closely. My issue is, is there any productive way to work on this issue ? She is otherwise a love bug, no other troubling behavior...without knowing where this fear comes from it is hard to understand...any ideas ? I had read ignore the bad, reward the good...I have asked my husband to ignore her,and when he enter the room and she begins to growl, I correct her. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks !
