Calicivirus. How to protect my other cats?

Post a new topicby Pantycrunch on Sun Mar 09, 2008 8:55 am

Hi,
Please could anybody give me any advice. I have read through the other posts and they are very informative.
I have four cats. Recently Mogwai (short haired domestic) started to smell quite badly, his bottom jaw was quivering and he had discharge from his nose. We took him straight to vets and they spotted ulcers in his mouth. They prescibed antibiotics to treat secondary infections, and a painkiller. We quaranteened him in his own room for 48 hours and bleached all the wooden floors & washed all bedding. All the cats have had all the vaccines to prevent 'Cat Flu' but it seems that maybe this strain of Calicivirus has got through.
Please could anybody help me with the following questions:
Will my other cats who have also had the vaccine still be protected against this strain, or is the strain immune to the vaccine? Or is it just the 'luck of the draw' which cat will not get it? I was playing with all four together with a piece of string attached to a stick and wonder if this passed something onto him from one of the other three who may be a carrier.
Will Mogwai the infected cat always be ill?
Will Mogwai always be a carrier?
Is there anything I can do to protect the others, or is it just wait and see? Ive been bleaching all my floors like mad.
Do I keep on vacinating all cats with everything as before?
I go from moments of many tears to feeling quite positive. I feel like my life has been turned upside down.... please help me to understand what is happening & what I should do for the best.
Thank you
Colette

My cat was just diagnosed as well. I am hoping that you have received some more information since it has been a little while since your cats were diagonsed. I have 2 other cats, that have not been vaccinated. Is it too late to get them vaccinated?

A vacination for this virus is just like any virus. A doctor/vet prescribes you a shot with a vacination and you might get the virus for awhile or you might not. This virus has no cure, no antivirus so vaccination can't protect your other cats from developing this. Also, your other cats maybe affected and it just be latent. Meaning it's just a carrier of it. I have read that you can transfer the virus to your other cats without meaning to such as a brush on your clothing of discharge from your affected cat. I'm not sure if that is correct but it's always good to be safe than sorry. You need to keep your other cats from the infected one. Either put it in a room with it's own dishes and litter. Cleaning your house with bleach is good. Also, don't let your cats outside because the virus could be dormit outside as well. You can keep vaccinating the cats, I would check with your vet to see what he/she recommends is the best treatment since there is no cure. Good luck and I hope this helps.
