Calici- What to do next?

Post a new topicby psychgal on Tue Jan 08, 2008 8:04 am

In mid-December, I took my kitten into my vet because he had not been feeling well. They said he had an infection- no mention of Calici. He had a 104 degree temp and was administered IV fluids. They sent him home with antibiotics.

On December 25, I arrived home from spending the day at my grandmother's house to find that my two of my cats looked as though they had been in a fight. Two of them had bloody noses. I took one of the cats to the vet the following day and was told that he had the new strain of Calici virus. The vet was extremely unprofessional. They made me take the cat out to my car after examining him and basically told me that all my cats were going to die. They send me home with some antibiotics and said I was going to have a "wild ride." The vet basically told me to "look it up on the internet." Lovely.

I placed all 8 of my cats into seperate cages in seperate rooms. Two of the cats had active oral ulcers on tongue and around mouth. I fed them canned food (this is a treat) and CatSip to encourage them to eat and drink. Two more of the cats developed ulcers. None of the cats ever had the typical upper respiratory infection symptoms like sneezing. A few days later I switched them back to their high quality dry cat food (Nutro) and water. I am now supplementing their dry food with spray on vitamins.

All traces of the virus are gone but I know they will continue to carry the virus forever. When can I release them out of cages and seperate rooms? Thank goodness I have a large house and have been able to keep them apart this long. Help!!

Dear Psychgal,

Thank you for participating in the forum. Sorry to hear about your pets' experience with Calicivirus. There is physician-developed and monitored information on treatment and prevention on this website at the following link:
http://www.animalhealthchannel.com/calicivirus/treatment.shtml

I hope this information is helpful. Physicians who monitor these forums respond to some posts but not to all, so please continue to post in the forum as you learn additional information.

I wish you the very best.
