My Boyfriend's bird Cocoa

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Jun 24, 2001 11:17 pm

Um yes, well my boyfriend's parakeet cocoa had mites a while ago , and had bitten his wing alot to itch them .
He has accuired an infection and is wing, and is having a hard time with use of his left leg. Do you have any suggestions on how to help the bird? how can we get rid of the infection without spending thousands or hundreds of dollars?
Please help ! if you can Email me at [moderator note: e-mail address has been removed] ASAP .

I would be worried about a parakeet (budgerigar) who is having trouble using a foot. This can be due to nerve damage from kidney or gonadal disease.

Mites come in two varieties in budgies: scaley face mites and red mites. Face mites cause white, fluffy lesions on the unfeathered areas of the feet and face; red mites cause itching and anemia.

Face mites can be treated successfully with ivermectin (available only through your veterinarian); red mites can be treated with an over-the-counter tin you hang on the cage.
