Malamute Skin ProblemPlease help me. My friend has a nine year old female Malamute who has had skin problems for several years now. She's been to at least four different vets and has been on Prednisone, several different kinds of antibiotics and Vitamin E. My friend has spent over $2,000 trying to get her cured or at least get her some relief. Because she is so miserable, especially in the summer which is coming up again, and because of the expense, he is considering having her put down in about a month if this latest round of treatment and some special shampoo recommended by the vet doesn't work. Has anyone else had this problem? I can't find anything on the internet about it. I found something on a skin condition but it was only documented in males and it didn't sound exactly like what she has. I can't stand to see this dog put down (and neither can her owner). She is the sweetest dog I've ever been around and I want to help her. Any ideas? We'll try anything.
Re: Malamute Skin ProblemThere is no way to know the nature of the skin disease form which this dog suffers without more information. However, given the breed involved, I would be concerned foremost about an inhertible immune-mediated skin disease.
These can be quite challenging to treat, with success dependent on the specific disease involved. If you friend has not had a diagnosis established through a skin biopsy or been referred to a dermatology specialist, these steps should be undertaken as soon as possible. Godd luck in obtaining some relief for this dog, for whom you obviously have a great affection. [quote] Please help me. Re: Re: Malamute Skin ProblemI also have a 2 1/2 year old Malamute but he's a male. He's had skin problems his whole life so I too am becoming conncerned. What was the outcome of your friends condition? Wondering if it's anything like what Teton has. Thank you

Re: Re: Re: Malamute Skin ProblemI have a 3-year-old Shepherd female. She has been exhibiting pimples (?) on her snout and head that seem to grow upward. The hair follicles in the immediate area die and a hard bump remains. The hard bumps are a little larger than a pinhead.
Our vet prescribed an antibiotic saying the rash is bacterial. Although the problem abated, somewhat it has returned. I took her to the lakefront where she ingested Canada Geese excrement. This is a possible source or drinking the water from a creek in an area park we frequent may be. I have been careful not to repeat this but the rash continues to exist. The rash doesn’t itch or ooze but if I try to remove them, it hurts her. I plan to try to find a vet dermatologist. Perhaps someone has had a similar problem.
