Ddalmatian Urinary Problem

Post a new topicby spotty on Wed Feb 20, 2008 3:45 pm

Hello:

I have a 3-year-old Dalmatian. We have had her for 3 months---she is a rescue. Her foster mentioned that she was being treated for a urinary infection with antibiotics (Clavamox)—so we decided to have her checked at our Vet for a followup.

She checked out great in her checkup and blood work but her urine tests were not all normal—esp. the PH—it was 6---there were crystals and amorphous debris present. She was put on u/d and we were told to retest in three months and to stop the Clavamox because it was causing digestive problems. At retest PH is still 5 or 6 and the analysis shows large amount of RBC/WBC. But—no crystals and small amount of epithelial cells—no casts.

She had an x-ray—and nothing was detected, though I realize that x-rays for stones are not 100% reliable.

It was suggested that we have an abdominal ultrasound done to further determine cause of RBC/WBC.

The dog is otherwise the typical healthy (?) Dal---normal water intake and normal urination.

I have had three other Dals—and I cannot remember any urinary problems such as this---although I fully realize that Dals are noted for this type problem and I have done research on it to become more familiar.

My questions are:

Since all Dals have a problem with urates, and can in fact form stones more easily than other breeds---is the above protocol acceptable? What is the next step if the ultrasound is negative? Should I push for a diagnosis and treatment protocol at that point? Unnecessary testing has always been a sore point with me---money is really not the problem---it is Vets who test and retest when this problem has been relevant to the breed and some protocols should be in place.

Thx for any feedback.

Peace!
