constipation

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Jun 27, 2001 12:52 pm

I have a 15 year old cat who has chronic constipation. The vet has done enemas on the cat but that does not solve the problem. Is there any kind of laxative that is safe for cats?
I tried extra virgin olive oil and a friend mention psyllum(sp) seeds to stimulate the intestines. But now I need to know where I can get such seeds.
Otherwise the cat seems ok.
Any help would be appreciated.

Both soluble fiber sources like psyllium (Metamucil) and insoluble fiber like bran, can be helpful in cases of recurrent constipation. It is, however, desirable to rule out miedical conditions that may contribute to constipation first.

Masses, old pelvic fractures and neurologic disease are the most common causes for recurrent problems. Old pelvic fractures can be treated surgically, although in many cases we attempt to manage the problem by using stool softeners. Mass lesions (tumors) should be treated surgically whenever possible. Finally, neuro-muscular disease (megacolon) is treated with a combination of therapies, including motility modifying drugs like cisapride.

I find that the combination of diet manipulation, fiber sources and promotility drugs work better than oil-based laxatives (like petroleum jelly or Laxatone) or stool softeners like DSS.
